India – Seventh Largest Vehicle Producing Country in World

According to Indian government, India is the seventh largest vehicle producing country in the world. Now the largest vehicle producing country is China and next is US.

There were expectations that India would become seventh largest vehicle producing country by 2016, but it has achieved this milestone in 2010 only, that is before six years of set target. India is expected to be top five vehicle producing country in the world by 2020, according to Auto Mission Plan. As per Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), vehicle production of the country increased by 25 percent from 11,172,275 units in the previous fiscal year 2005-06, to 14,049,830 units in 2009-10.

AMP had the aim to increase the turnover of the automotive sector to USD 145 billion in 2016 and aim to provide the employment to 25 million people with in the period of 10 years. Automotive sector’s turnover was USD 34 billion in 2005-06, and employment as 13.1 million people.

The development of automotive sector can be good economically, but it may have adverse effect on the environment.
