Future advancements in electronics will be full of potential organic electronics. This field of study has come up and developing over the past 10 years in many areas including device design, material development, disposition process and modeling. Organic semiconductors can offer a lot to electronics field. These are flexible, cheaper and production process is simpler than silicon chips, which are used in traditional methods.
Pioneer’s OLED car stereo display is the first organic electronic product launched in the year 1998. This has major application like photo voltaic, displays, lightening and smart systems.
Organic electronics is a new field in electronics and the structures used here are based on organic materials such as the dielectric and conductive/semiconductor polymers or small organic molecules deposited mainly on flexible substrates. In general, it’s a device made up of carbon settled materials. They offer more benefits when compared to the conventional silicon-based alternatives. They are cheap and can be used almost anywhere – packing, etc. They can be folded, used in clothing, flexible and potential. Apart from these is an issue called biodegradability and is the low speed.
In the years to come, organic electronics will have a huge market for organic photovoltaics, organic LEDs and organic thin film transistors.
OLEDs
OLEDs are organic light-emitting diodes that are used currently in mobile phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, etc. They offer increased performance when compared to other technologies such as LCD by improving color, extending the viewing angle and drawing less current. And, other devices like electronic paper and electronic shelf-edge displays are going to be launched for retail applications.
Manufacturers of wireless devices use OLED technology for creating video qualities and low power consumption. The life time of OLEDs increased to 100 khrs from 24 khrs in 2008. And the U.S. Department of Energy ensured OLED lighting to reach 150 lm/w efficiency in 2012.
Organic photovoltaics
Organic photovoltaics is meant to meet the demands of market where the conventional silicon solar cells have failed due it is production. This is not eco-friendly, and it is demanding and expensive apart from its low (25%) efficiency. Increasing in the petrol prices, high-energy demands, and interests in renewable energy led to the invention and also the demands on new energy sources.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags
RFID tags are helpful in replacing bar codes in some applications which gives self information like low-cost products and packing. It can change retail management with enhanced brand management and inventory tracking. It is expected to generate U.S. $12.4B by 2015.
Organic electronics in future is expected to come up with organic electronic devices or products like Flexible displays Smart TVs, flexible batteries, printed memory, etc.
